The USDA has announced a second window for applications for Distance Learning and Telemedicine grants, often used to develop or expand connected health programs in areas where access to care is difficult. While the first window for applications runs through April 10, the new window – during which only online applications will be accepted - will run from April 14 through July 13.
“Due to the COVID-19 National Emergency, USDA is providing an additional window for those who cannot complete applications prior to the first application deadline,” Bette Brand, the USDA’s Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development, said in a press release. “This action will provide more time for applicants to complete their funding requests.”
“Access to distance learning and telemedicine makes it easier for thousands of rural residents to take advantage of health care and educational opportunities without having to travel long distances or be among large groups of people,” she added.
The funding will not only be helpful to hospitals and health systems looking to expand telehealth capabilities during the national emergency, but position those providers to have a good virtual care system in place once the emergency passes.
Roughly $72 million is being made available in these two rounds to state and local governmental entities, federally recognized tribes, nonprofits and for-profit businesses to support a wide range of healthcare and educational efforts.
The USDA’s Rural Development program has been bolstered by $25 million from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, the $2 trillion bill passed by Congress and signed into law last month. The agency is expected to announce soon how that money will be used.
Last November, the USDA announced the 74 grants were issued for telehealth programs through the DLT program.
