New Jersey Expands COVID-19 Telehealth Coverage for Specialists
State officials have amended practice standards to allow physical therapists, audiologists, speech language pathologists, social workers, psychologists, nurses and others to use telehealth during the pandemic.
New Jersey lawmakers have expanded the state’s telehealth guidelines to allow more healthcare providers to use connected health technologies during the coronavirus pandemic.
The state’s Division of Consumer Affairs last month adopted standards for telehealth use by audiologists, speech language pathologists, acupuncturists, physical therapists, psychologists, social workers, genetic counselors and nurses. The new rules will remain in effect for the duration of the COVID-19 public health emergency.
The agency is also accepting public comments on proposals to allow marriage and family therapy counselors, electrologists, physician assistants and professional counselors to use telehealth during the public health emergency. Those comments are due by December 18.
“During these unprecedented times, the availability of telehealth services has been critical, allowing as many New Jerseyans as possible to get the medical services they need during the current public health emergency,” New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said in a press release. “Moreover, the use of telecommunication technology has helped reduce in-person encounters that could spread COVID-19.”
“Making it easier for patients and providers to use telemedicine has been part of a coordinated statewide effort to bolster New Jersey’s emergency preparedness, while expanding access to essential care for the duration of the pandemic,” he added. “With an eye to the future, the new host of regulatory guidelines will facilitate the use of telemedicine as demand continues to grow.”
New Jersey joins a growing number of states expanding telehealth coverage and access to address the pandemic, which is forcing stressed healthcare providers to reduce in-person treatment and move more services onto telemedicine and mHealth platforms.
