Hitachi NAS platform 4000 overview

The Hitachi NAS platform 4000 series consists of four product models that use a discrete controller that can be attached to almost any Hitachi storage system.

The Hitachi NAS (HNAS) platform 4000 series has a modular architecture and consists of the 4040, 4060, 4080 and 4100 models. The series includes features such as Automated Data Management, HDS Universal Migrator and support for VMware's Virtual Volumes (VVOLs).

The modular layout of the Hitachi NAS platform is unlike that of most other NAS systems. Other NAS products combine controllers and storage in one physical infrastructure, but the Hitachi NAS is a discrete controller that can be attached to almost any Hitachi storage system, including Hitachi Unified Storage (HUS) VM, the HUS 100 series and the Virtual Storage Platform (VSP).

The HNAS 4040 supports a maximum usable capacity of 4 PB and can scale to two nodes per cluster. It has a maximum throughput of 700 MBps and a system memory of 32 GB. The HNAS 4060 has a maximum usable capacity of 8 PB and also scales to two nodes per cluster. It has a maximum throughput of 1,000 MBps and a maximum system memory of 46 GB. The HNAS 4080 has a maximum capacity of 16 PB and scales to a maximum of four nodes per cluster. It has 1,500 MBps of throughput and 46 GB of system memory. The HNAS 4100 has a maximum capacity of 32 PB, scales to eight nodes per cluster and has a maximum throughput of 2,000 MBps. It has a system memory of 108 GB.

Other NAS products combine controllers and storage in one physical infrastructure, but the Hitachi NAS is a discrete controller that can be attached to almost any Hitachi storage system.

Port densities and throughputs vary based on the controller used. The HNAS 4040 has two 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports for clustering and two 10 GbE ports for file serving, as well as four 4 Gbps Fibre Channel (FC) ports and one serial I/O port for management. The HNAS 4060, 4080 and 4100 have two 10 GbE ports for clustering and four 10 GbE ports for file serving, four 8 Gbps FC ports and one serial I/O port.

Automated Data Management is a multifunctional storage management tool that supports file tiering and the policy-based Data Migration to Cloud (DM2C) tool. DM2C supports Amazon S3 Web Services, Hitachi Cloud Services and Microsoft Azure. The Universal Migrator tool allows users to move data from non-Hitachi storage platforms to a Hitachi NAS system. HNAS controllers have VMware VVOLs software, which virtualizes NAS arrays for detailed control over virtualized environments.

Pricing for the Hitachi NAS platform 4000 series is highly variable depending on capacity and the type of storage picked to run behind the controllers. A fully configured HNAS 4040 attached to an HUS 110 with 40 TB of storage costs approximately $56,000. The HNAS lineup comes with a Weekday Basic three-year warranty that includes maintenance during regular business hours (9 to 5), next-business day response and parts replacement, and 24/7 telephone support. Standard and Premium warranties that provide 24/7 maintenance, two- to four-hour response times, and telephone support triaged by severity can be purchased at an additional cost.
