EMC Isilon S-Series NAS: Isilon S210 and Isilon S200

The Isilon S210 and S200 are part of the EMC Isilon S-Series line of NAS systems for data storage environments that require mid-level network storage offerings.

The EMC Isilon S-Series is a lineup of midrange NAS systems designed for primary storage with an emphasis on performance. The series consists of the Isilon S200 and Isilon S210. Both platforms support hybrid flash configurations combining high-performance solid-state drives (SSDs) with higher-capacity and lower-cost mechanical hard disk drives (HDDs). Both products can be scaled into clusters of up to 144 nodes.

When using the highest-capacity drives supported, the EMC Isilon S200 has a maximum raw capacity of 33.6 TB per single node. The maximum HDD storage is 28.8 TB, while the maximum SSD storage is 4.8 TB. It can fit 18 to 24 2.5-inch 10,000 rpm HDDs. The unit supports HDD capacities of 300 GB, 600 GB, 900 GB and 1.2 TB. It can also fit up to six SSDs with capacities of 200 GB, 400 GB or 800 GB. The unit uses a 6 Gbps Serial Attached SCSI-2 (SAS-2) drive controller and dual four-core Intel Xeon processors. It can have 24 GB, 48 GB or 96 GB of system memory. The Isilon S200 has four networking ports that can be configured in a variety of combinations of 1 Gigabit Ethernet (GigE), 1000 Base-T GigE, 1 GigE (copper) or 10 GigE. The S200 requires Isilon OneFS operating system (OS) version 6.5.5 or later.

The Isilon S200 supports a variety of software and management options:

  • Isilon SmartDedupe allows deduplication of redundant data across multiple sources.
  • SmartPools implements an automated tiering system to move frequently used data into performance-based pools.
  • SmartConnect provides greater data reliability by supporting load balancing and dynamic network file system failover across nodes.

All software options offered in the EMC Isilon S-Series must be licensed separately. However, a version of SmartConnect called SmartConnect Basic is included in the OneFS OS and it does not require any licensing.

Both platforms support hybrid flash configurations combining high-performance solid-state drives with higher-capacity and lower-cost mechanical hard disk drives.

The EMC Isilon S210 has a maximum raw capacity of 33.6 TB per node. It fits 22 to 24 300 GB or 600 GB HDDs, 18 to 24 900 GB or 1.2 TB HDDs, up to six 400 GB or 800 GB SSDs. If fit with 300 GB or 600 GB HDDs, it accepts a maximum of two SSDs for a total flash storage capacity of 1.6 TB. If 900 GB or 1.2 TB HDDs are used, a maximum of six SSDs can be accepted for a total flash storage capacity of 4.8 TB. It also supports self-encrypting drive (SED) HDDs in 900 GB capacity only, and 800 GB SED SSDs only in conjunction with 900 GB HDDs. The Isilon S210 can have 32 GB, 64 GB, 128 GB or 256 GB of system memory, and two Base-T GigE or 10-GigE networking ports. It uses a 6 Gbps SAS-2 drive controller and dual six-core Intel Xeon processors. The Isilon S210 requires Isilon OneFS OS version 7.1.1 or later.

Pricing for the EMC Isilon S-Series depends on configuration. The starting list price for the Isilon S210 is $100,000. Additionally, both products have a minimum order quantity of three nodes. The products come with a one-year standard hardware-only Limited Warranty. The optional Enhanced warranty upgrade provides a 9-5 next-business day on-site response, technical support with response times based on severity, and next-business day replacement part delivery. The Premium warranty upgrade provides on-site response, technical support and replacement part delivery tiered based on severity. Critical priority issues receive a 30-minute online response, and a four-hour on-site response time and replacement parts delivery.
