Listen to this podcast

Black Hat USA 2023 in Las Vegas covered several trends, such as generative AI and cloud security issues, as well as new vulnerabilities, including the Downfall flaw in Intel chips.

Black Hat USA 2023 tackled a variety of cybersecurity topics, from large language models to new vulnerabilities.

This year's Black Hat was the 26th year of the Las Vegas cybersecurity conference, and it took place Aug. 5-10. Generative AI was center stage at the show, as it featured multiple AI-themed announcements, and there was a general sense of an early maturing for this phase of LLM-powered technology. Generative AI was also the theme of RSA Conference 2023, which took place in San Francisco this April.

Black Hat is also a time for new research to be disclosed, and perhaps the most prominent was the Downfall series of attacks unveiled by Google Senior Research Scientist Daniel Moghimi. Downfall is a new class of attacks discovered by Moghimi that involves the exploitation of a flaw, CVE-2022-40982, in Intel superscalar processors.

Other trends observed at the show include focuses on cloud security issues and attack surface management. On this episode of the Risk & Repeat podcast, TechTarget editors Rob Wright and Alex Culafi discuss takeaways from Black Hat USA.
