ScienceLogic EM7: Network performance monitor overview

ScienceLogic EM7 is still a newcomer to the network performance monitoring market, but it offers flexible deployment options, including VMs and software-as-a-service installations.

Editor's note: This ScienceLogic EM7 product overview is part of a series on network performance monitoring. The series also explores the evolution of network monitoring technology, discusses the major use cases, lays out the major purchasing criteria and compares the leading vendors on the market.

A relatively young company compared to many network performance monitoring (NPM) competitors, ScienceLogic EM7 network performance management software has already established itself as a force in the industry. The company's platform has won recognition for its simplicity of implementation, ease of management and scalability. The key to ScienceLogic's success is it's a single product with a simplified licensing model. This helps network administrators spend less time learning the product from an implementation and maintenance standpoint; instead, it lets them focus on actually using it.

ScienceLogic EM7 NPM platform

ScienceLogic EM7 runs on a single appliance, running a single code base. But just because the software is streamlined doesn't mean your deployment options are limited. In fact, the EM7 platform can be deployed as a hardware appliance, a virtual machine, as a software as a service (SaaS) or even as an Amazon Machine Image (AMI). This amount of flexibility in terms of deployment options means EM7 can be deployed in virtually any network infrastructure.

ScienceLogic refers to  EM7 as a hybrid IT monitoring platform. This is because the platform can not only monitor traditional network infrastructures that are privately owned and managed, but also the monitoring and performance statistic gathering of public clouds. Additionally, a relatively and complementary NPM tool, CloudMapper, automatically maps and monitors SaaS applications from one centralized interface.

Pricing and support

Licensing for the on-premises version of ScienceLogic EM7 is based on the number of physical and virtual devices to be monitored. CloudMapper and SaaS or AMI EM7 use a monthly, pay-as-you-go pricing model. ScienceLogic hardware, software, licensing and services are purchased through participating resellers.

ScienceLogic offers 24/7 phone, email and web support, an emergency hotline, product training sessions, software updates and a beta program.

On-site support for hardware is offered through Dell Silver Enterprise Support, which guarantees a technician will be sent within four hours of a request.
