IBM Tivoli software for enterprise system management

IBM Tivoli enterprise system management products are designed to manage all aspects of a data center, including storage, monitoring and automation.

IBM Tivoli software is an enterprise system management platform with specialized components customized for IT administrators that manage midsize and enterprise data centers.

The Tivoli brand of products comprises dozens of software as a service packages for IT infrastructures. The most relevant and important packages for system management are Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM), Tivoli Monitoring and IBM Workload Automation.

TSM is an enterprise backup and data security application. Its modular product structure offers data storage and security flexibility for diverse environments. Smaller organizations start with Storage Manager, while larger enterprises typically choose the Storage Manager Extended Edition with more disaster recovery and tape and disk support. Storage Manager can also interface with VMware for virtual environments through its vStorage API, and can back up to VMware's vCloud. It also interfaces with virtual servers running Microsoft's Hyper-V.

The software can be managed either from the TSM Operations Center or from VMware vCenter.

Tivoli Monitoring software, like Storage Manager, has multiple options for implementation. Where Storage Manager ensures data security, Tivoli Monitoring ensures infrastructure efficiency by providing a single, quick-glance view of capacity usage, performance and health. The software's built-in analytics engine allows administrators to track a given workload's resource consumption to prevent inefficient provisioning.

Tivoli Monitoring for Virtual Environments is a version of the software specifically tailored to virtual systems, and it carries a unique predictive analytics algorithm. The what-if analysis feature allows IT professionals to run models using actual performance data to determine how best to set up their virtual infrastructure.

IBM Workload Automation rounds out the main systems management suite with software that combines Tivoli Workload Scheduler with a cloud-resource manager to create greater automation and streamline administrative tasks. Like Tivoli Monitoring, Workload Automation has a simulation and forecasting add-on so administrators can model workflows to gauge resource consumption and time of completion. Workload Automation integrates with Tivoli Service Automation Manager to deploy and manage cloud computing services.

Budgeting for Tivoli

When it comes to pricing and availability, each product is as unique as the service it offers. Tivoli Storage Manager is a family of products, with Storage Manager as its flagship software. A data protection and recovery version -- Storage Manager FastBack -- is available for a free trial. The full Storage Manager software is around $44.50 for a 10 processor value unit (PVU) license. Alternatively, a client license costs around $83.75.

IBM's Tivoli Monitoring suite also presents various options. The Tivoli Monitoring product is a catch-all monitoring system for a company's IT infrastructure, and costs around $437 per resource value unit (RVU) license. An RVU license is similar to a PVU license, but relies upon the number of processors used. Tivoli Monitoring for Virtual Environments is specific to virtual servers and hypervisors, and costs $511 per RVU license.

In contrast to the other two, Tivoli Workload Automation is a single software package, and starts at around $54.50 for a 10-job license.
