Rule #1: Start your CMDB project around the business value it brings. Populating a CMDB with data or Configuration Items (CIs) and relationships has no real value in and of itself. The value comes from the processes it supports or the business decisions that can be made from it. Without understanding what value you want to drive out of the CMDB, it will become a journey with no end in sight.
