New HP services unveiled for data sanitization, retention, recovery

Resellers can now offer HP services that are designed to ease customers' data sanitization, retention and recovery efforts.

For channel partners working with customers who need to manage compliance requirements and keep confidential information secure, Hewlett-Packard Co. this week introduced a suite of IT services to help do just that.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) Data Privacy Services help customers manage and protect sensitive data contained on active or retired hardware, according to the company. The four service offerings aim to securely retain and sanitize hardware that may contain sensitive personal information subject to government or industry regulations, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, Sarbanes-Oxley or the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act.

"Any partner who is selling HP solutions in the financial, medical, government and Internet transactions sectors, as well as [to] customers who need to meet government regulations, would be interested in selling the new Data Privacy Services," said John Flowers, global channel marketing lead for HP Technology Services.

Data sanitization: The first service, HP Data Sanitization, goes beyond simply erasing data on systems being retired, upgraded or redeployed -- or those that are being returned as part of a lease agreement. With this on-site service, HP-certified storage specialists use specialized technologies to scrub and destroy data on all devices and perform a validation check, which can be used for security audits, according to HP.

Retention: HP Defective Media Retention (DMR) and HP Comprehensive Defective Material Retention (CDMR) are two offerings for data safety -- whether in the disk, switch components, memory-retentive system boards or system memory.

With HP DMR, if hardware that is covered under DMR malfunctions, the problem can be diagnosed and the device or part of the device can be replaced.

CDMR, for its part, allows customers to keep all data retentive components while HP replaces the malfunctioning part.

HP resellers can sell the three services as options to various HP Care Pack Services for hardware support and offer a variety of response and coverage options to help customers meet their unique business requirements. Primarily, ServiceOne partners sell and renew HP Contractual Services and can offer these services.

"Additionally, partners who are ServiceOne-delivery-qualified can sell and deliver against the DMR and CDMR services," Flowers said.

Recovery: Designed as a turnkey program, the fourth service, HP Asset Recovery Services, uses best practices and globally consistent standards to pack, stage and transport or remove equipment being recycled or resold.

HP also put in place a set of best practices that its HP Technology Services support professionals share with customers to improve compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, respond to security events, and maintain accurate records.

According to James Gallo, HP practice team lead at channel partner En Pointe Technologies, customers often talk about their heightened concerns regarding privacy and security.

"Our customers tell us that they are worried about unauthorized access to private data and potential security breaches in their IT systems. HP's new Data Privacy Services meet a growing need in the marketplace, and we're excited to begin to offer this suite of services to our customer base," he said.

Gallo also noted that it helps that this type of service comes from a large and reliable vendor, lending immediate credibility to the product.
