Beaumont, Spectrum Merged Hospital System Rebrands to Corewell Health

The merged hospital system, newly named Corewell Health, aims to provide patients with simple, affordable, and equitable care.

The merged hospital system between Beaumont Health and Spectrum Health, formerly known as BHSH System, will now be called Corewell Health, the health system announced.

Beaumont Health and Spectrum Health announced plans to merge in June 2021. The systems formalized their plans in September 2021 and finalized the deal in February 2022, forming Michigan’s largest health system, temporarily named BHSH System.

The merged health system includes 22 hospitals, 305 outpatient locations, and 64,000 employees.

The two facilities aimed to improve health equity, invest in new technologies to expand virtual offerings, and increase access to more affordable healthcare coverage for Michigan residents. The merger deal also offered members access to Spectrum Health’s health plan, Priority Health.

“At our core, we are here to help people be well so they can live their healthiest life possible,” Tina Freese Decker, president and chief executive officer of Corewell Health, said in the press release.

“We recognize the amazing outcomes and history from Beaumont Health and Spectrum Health. Now together, known as Corewell Health, we move forward unified, focused on health and wellness for all. The name selection is especially inspiring as it was influenced by thousands of ideas from our team members who put health and wellness at the core of everything we do.”

Corewell Health is committed to providing simple, affordable, and equitable care to patients, according to the press release. In addition, the health system said patients can expect to receive high-quality care, services, and outcomes, as more services are available across Michigan.

The signage for the new name will include blue and green colors to represent the existing colors used by Beaumont Health, Spectrum Health, and Priority Health. The rollout for the signage will start soon and be phased over the next two years, Corewell Health said.

Priority Health’s name will not change with this announcement, the press release noted.

However, the 22 hospitals included in the health system and three medical groups will receive updated names. For example, Beaumont Hospital Troy will now be known as Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital and Spectrum Health Medical Group is now Corewell Health Medical Group West.

A complete list of updated names can be found here.

In September 2022, the merged health system announced that it was laying off 400 people in management and non-patient-facing jobs for financial reasons. According to the facility, high inflation, rising labor and pharmaceutical costs, the COVID-19 pandemic, and reimbursement cuts created financial pressures.

Despite seeing rising revenues and patient volumes in August, hospital margins remained negative. According to Kaufman Hall researchers, hospital finances will likely remain unstable for the rest of 2022.
