New CEO to Take Over for Gorsky at Johnson & Johnson

Alex Gorsky, who has been at Johnson & Johnson for over 30 years, will now serve as executive chairman, with Joaquin Duato taking over as chief executive officer role.

Johnson & Johnson will have a new CEO in 2022. Current chairman and CEO Alex Gorsky is transitioning to the role of executive chairman and will be replaced as CEO by Joaquin Duato, according to a recent press release

Johnson & Johnson also appointed Duato, who is currently vice chairman of the executive committee, as a member of the board of directors. The transition will take effect in January 2022.

“It has been an honor and privilege to lead this company as Chairman and CEO for nearly a decade, and I am pleased to serve as Executive Chairman to help oversee Johnson & Johnson’s ongoing progress improving the health of people and communities everywhere,” Gorsky said in an official statement.

“I am humbled to lead our talented and dedicated team of 136,000 associates around the world, and I am immensely proud of how we have upheld the Company’s 134-year legacy of delivering solutions to address the world’s most urgent, unmet healthcare needs. The decision to step aside was one of the most difficult of my career,” he continued.

Gorsky has served as chairman and CEO of Johnson & Johnson since 2012. He oversaw an over 60-percent increase in research and development investments to $12 billion in 2020.

A primary focal point of the research and development investments under Gorsky was oncology.

Additionally, Gorsky has helped to transform the company’s medical devices, helped shaped its consumer health portfolio, and has overseen Johnson & Johnson’s breakthroughs in vaccine programs, including in Ebola, HIV, and most recently, COVID-19.

Duato also stated that he is “honored to serve” as Johnson & Johnson’s next CEO and inspired by the opportunity to play a key role in meaningfully improving the global trajectory of human health.

“I have the utmost confidence in Joaquin to lead Johnson & Johnson as the Company’s next CEO,” continued Gorsky. “Over our more than 25 years of working together, he has always demonstrated a passion for solving complex medical and business challenges.”
