IL Hospital Suffers Cybersecurity Incident

Illinois-based Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers is investigating a cybersecurity incident that occurred when the organization discovered unusual activity within its network.

Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers, an 89-bed hospital located 55 miles southwest of Chicago, disclosed that it has been investigating a cybersecurity incident. Morris Hospital recently detected unusual activity on its network and later discovered that an unauthorized third-party had accessed its network.

The incident did not impact the hospital’s electronic medical record systems, nor did it impact patient care or hospital operations.

“After taking immediate action to contain the incident, Morris Hospital began an extensive investigation with assistance from outside experts,” the notice continued.

“At this time, the investigation remains active and involves a review of each individual file on the affected servers to determine whether any sensitive data was compromised, a process called e-discovery.”

Morris Hospital said it would provide more updates as information becomes available and credited its existing IT security measures as being “instrumental in preventing a more severe incident.”

ID Hospitals Recovering from Cyberattack

Idaho-based Mountain View Hospital, Idaho Falls Community Hospital, and their partners are actively recovering from a cyberattack that took place in late May. The investigation is still ongoing, but the hospitals assured patients that its IT team identified the attack in a timely manner and took efforts to keep patient information secure.

“Until we feel confident the virus has been fully removed, some clinics will be closed, Idaho Falls Community Hospital will divert ambulances to nearby hospitals and normal workflows may look a little different,” the notice stated. “Patients will be contacted by their provider if their appointments are impacted.”

Surgeries are continuing as scheduled and the hospitals’ emergency departments remain open.

Tennessee Orthopaedic Clinics Discloses Breach

Tennessee Orthopaedic Clinics (TOC) responded to a security incident that occurred between March 20 and March 24, 2023. TOC’s investigation determined that an unauthorized party had accessed some of its systems and acquired files.

The files contained patient names, birth dates, diagnosis and treatment information, contact information, provider names, prescription information, cost of services, and health insurance information.

TOC said that it responded to the incident immediately upon discovery and launched an investigation with a third-party firm. The organization has since implemented additional technical security measures.
