CentroMed suffers second healthcare data breach
An unauthorized party accessed and acquired files pertaining to current and former CentroMed patients, resulting in a healthcare data breach.
CentroMed, a San Antonio, Texas-based organization that operates a network of 23 clinic sites, notified 400,000 individuals of a healthcare data breach that occurred in May 2024. CentroMed also suffered a breach in June 2023, which impacted 350,000 individuals at the time.
The latest breach, like the first, was the result of unauthorized access to its IT network. On May 1, CentroMed was alerted to unusual activity in its network and later determined that an unauthorized party had accessed its network on April 30. While inside, the unauthorized party was able to access and acquire files with information pertaining to current and former patients.
The breach involved patient names, addresses, Social Security numbers, financial account information, health insurance information, diagnosis information, dates of birth and claims data.
“We take this incident very seriously and sincerely regret any concern this may cause,” CentroMed stated. “To help prevent something like this from happening again, we have implemented additional safeguards and technical security measures to further protect and monitor our systems.”
Ambulance service discloses 2023 breach
Superior Air-Ground Ambulance Service notified more than 858,000 individuals of a healthcare data breach that occurred in May 2023. Superior launched an investigation after discovering suspicious activity within its systems and determined that an unauthorized party had copied files from its network.
Superior described its review of impacted files as “comprehensive and time-intensive” over the past year.
The affected information included names, addresses, financial account information, payment card information, medical diagnosis information, health insurance information, Social Security numbers, and patient record information.
“As part of its ongoing commitment to the privacy and security of information in its care, Superior has taken steps to review its policies and procedures and has implemented additional security measures,” the ambulance service stated.
