Mayo Clinic, Lisa Health Leverage AI to Create Personalized Menopause App

Mayo Clinic and Lisa Health have partnered to launch an app that leverages AI, sensor technology, and digital therapeutics to support menopause management and healthy aging.

In collaboration with Mayo Clinic, digital health company Lisa Health launched Midday, a personalized solution that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and digital therapeutics to provide menopause management.

According to the press release, the world population of menopausal and postmenopausal people is projected to increase to 1.2 billion by 2030, with 47 million new entrants into the categories each year. More than 75 percent of them are expected to experience symptoms, like hot flashes, mood changes, and sleep problems, that last seven to nine years on average and up to a decade or longer for some. The press release further notes that few clinicians are trained in menopause care, leaving gaps for those seeking support and potentially compounding the problems related to menopause.

"The impacts of menopause on women and society are wide ranging and we’ve ignored them for too long," said Ann Garnier, Lisa Health’s co-founder, and CEO, in the press release. "As a senior healthcare technology executive who was thriving in the workplace, I experienced firsthand just how debilitating menopause can be and the potential for it to derail my career and personal relationships. From that moment, I became passionate about using advanced technology to transform the menopause experience."

Midday aims to bridge care gaps by providing perimenopause and menopause support using AI and sensor technology. By leveraging these technologies, the app can evaluate menopause progression and deliver personalized insights, such as tips, strategies, and education based on each user’s stage and symptoms.

The app also provides access to a Mayo Clinic-powered technology platform, which delivers education about menopausal hormone therapy and helps users determine whether it may be right for them based on Mayo Clinic’s algorithm. Users can also schedule a virtual visit with a Mayo Clinic menopause specialist through the app.

Users can also connect the app to a Fitbit to aggregate their data in one place and get personalized menopause-specific insights, the press release notes.

Lisa Health will launch a premium version of the app later this year, which will include additional algorithms designed to use commercially available wearables for advanced symptom tracking. The company is also collaborating with Mayo Clinic on further research around menopause and technology's role in menopause management and support.

"Mayo Clinic is an established leader in women’s health, and specifically in the care of women across the menopause transition," said Stephanie Faubion, MD, director of Mayo Clinic Women’s Health, in the press release. "By collaborating with Lisa Health, we can help ensure that more women have access to a high-quality, personalized, evidence-based solution they can trust. Menopause is a critical life stage and a window of opportunity to use technology to improve women’s quality of life and health span."
