UCI Health Aims to Improve Remote Patient Monitoring Via AI Partnership

By partnering with Biofourmis, UCI Health is working to prevent hospital readmissions through enhanced AI remote patient monitoring strategies.

To support continuous artificial intelligence-powered remote monitoring of acute and post-acute care, UCI Health has announced a multi-year agreement with Biofourmis, a Boston-based global lead in digital therapeutics and virtual care.

With Biofourmis’ solutions, UCI Health is planning to establish a virtual care platform for remote patient monitoring (RPM) and hospital-at-home initiatives. Additionally, just last month, UCI Health announced a partnership with DispatchHealth to coordinate and deliver care directly in patients’ homes.

RPM is a method of healthcare delivery that utilizes information technology to gather patient data outside traditional healthcare settings. It allows physicians to provide care to the patient when and where they need it.

Biofourmis’ RPM platform is set to replace UNC’s recent system and will enable clinicians to continue monitoring appropriate patients after their discharge. Post-acute RPM can help prevent hospital readmissions and, for some patients, can be an alternative to rehabilitation centers or nursing facilities.

“Building on our existing operational excellence, virtual care, and innovation strategies during the pandemic, we are focused on providing tools that allow our patients to recover in the comfort of their homes,” UCI Health Executive Director of Virtual Care Susanna Rustad said in a press release.

“We want to simplify our patients' journey and streamline patient progression through our hospital system to help transform care, using technology as an enabler.”

Vital signs and other biometrics will be automatically collected within UCI Health’s Epic electronic health record system and analyzed through the Biofourmis AI algorithms. The AI can then establish a personalized patient baseline using data collected from wearable biosensors and electronic patient-reported outcomes.

When the baseline is analyzed against population-level data, the AI generates a real-time, reliable view of disease trajectory. Machine learning capabilities can then alert clinicians to opportunities that optimize treatment, predict outcomes, improve patient engagement, and prevent serious medical events before they occur.

UCI Health is part of the clinical enterprise of the University of California, Irving, and is Orange County’s only academic health system. It is the main teaching location for the UCI School of Medicine.

The medical center is a 459-bed acute care hospital providing tertiary and quaternary care, ambulatory and specialty medical, behavioral health, and rehabilitation services.
