Generative Artificial Intelligence Collaborative Launched at HLTH 2023
A collective of providers, payers, and other stakeholders have launched VALID AI to explore use cases and best practices for generative AI in healthcare.
A group of over 30 founding partners launched the Vision, Alignment, Learning, Implementation, and Dissemination of Validated Generative AI in Healthcare (VALID AI) collaborative this week at HLTH to investigate the potential for generative artificial intelligence to advance medical research and clinical care.
The initiative brings together healthcare providers, payers, nonprofit organizations, and research and technology stakeholders, some of which include Boston Children’s Hospital, Cedars-Sinai, Elevance, Ochsner Health, the University of California health systems, the American Cancer Society, the Center for Health Technology & Innovation – American Heart Association, and the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI).
“By embracing open innovation and radical collaboration, health care organizations of all sizes can lead the charge in creating value from Gen AI in a responsible manner,” said Ashish Atreja, MD, MPH, FACP, AGAF, who serves as CIO and chief digital health officer at UC Davis Health, in the press release. “We now have an opportunity to co-create the science of Gen AI with our diverse partners in a way that could fundamentally change how care and research will be delivered in the future.”
VALID AI’s work is centered around five core values: vision, alignment, learning, implementation, and dissemination.
The vision pillar is concerned with developing a shared, cohesive strategy to guide generative AI research, promote equitable access to resources, and accelerate members’ implementation of generative AI tools.
Alignment involves assisting member organizations with establishing and applying generative AI standards and frameworks.
Learning is aimed at ensuring the most relevant, up-to-date research on healthcare generative AI use cases, policy, standards, and implementation science is available to VALID AI members via in-person summits, executive briefings, virtual learning sessions, online forums, and a member portal.
Implementation helps establish a “collaborative AI sandbox” to support members’ integration, validation, and implementation efforts.
Dissemination focuses on sharing knowledge and insights generated by the initiative’s work worldwide through journal articles, white papers, op-eds, and an in-person “Generative AI in Health Care Summit.”
"Gen AI holds tremendous promise for health care but requires guardrails to ensure safety and efficacy,” said Dennis Chornenky, chief AI advisor at UC Davis Health and CEO of Domelabs AI, who will serve as the executive director of VALID AI. “VALID AI will accelerate adoption through coordinated validation of use-cases and alignment around best practices for AI governance and AI-enabled innovation.”
