How Data Impacts Medication Access, Adherence, and Utilization

Improved data sharing between providers, payers, and pharmacies will ensure consumers can benefit from a growing body of effective therapies.

Spending on prescriptions represents a growing portion of healthcare spending in the United States. And proper medication utilization and adherence are critical factors in determining health outcomes. But timely access to medication depends on the coordination of providers, payers, and pharmacies, with information often unable to move efficiently between stakeholders to enable accurate payment and proper distribution. With more advanced therapies coming to market, education is essential to streamlining consumer access to drugs and other therapies and must center on ensuring data sharing keeps all parties on the same page. As healthcare consumers become more engaged in their care and shoulder more of the cost, they too will need to be brought into the fold to facilitate access to effective and affordable medications.
